Abstract:
The research project proposes investigation on principle properties of concrete and the durability of the concrete using steel slag as aggregates. The steel slag after classifying and screening is used to replace total coarse aggregates in the concrete. The principle properties of the concrete investigated include the workability, compression strength, tension strength, young modulus, chloride diffusion coefficient, charge passed and expansion.
Using steel slag coarse aggregate can produce concrete with grade of up to 80MPa. However, the workability of the fresh concrete is reduced. Also, the durability of steel slag coarse aggregate concrete is decreased as exposed to the chloride environments which are acid or salt. The research project help my academic network to be strengthened. I have chances to widen my research network or exchange results to other research group. The research project has contribution of my staffs and my students. We work hard together to look for findings from the research project. This process enhances research capacity of my team as we had publications at different events. The research results confirm that steel slag has mechanical properties which are suitable to replace natural aggregates in the concrete. This supports useful information to society and industry that we can recycle steel slag and use it as aggregates in the concrete to save natural resources.
