With effective rehabilitation, stroke patients can partially restore their motor control to regain normal life. However, traditional rehabilitation therapies, such as strengthening motor skills, mobility training, speech and language therapy, and constraint induced therapy, offer poor rehabilitation performance. Recently, brain computer interface (BCI) with virtual reality (VR) is found to offer promising rehabilitation training for people with disabilities. In general, BCI allows patients to interact with their environment through brain signals rather than through muscles, and hence restoring motor function by inducing activity-dependent brain neuroplasticity. Meanwhile, VR technologies provide motivating, safe, and controlled conditions that enable improvement of BCI. The need to understand brain signal for stroke patient is fundamental for future development of stroke rehabilitation based on BCI technology with VR.
