Currently in Indonesia, environmental issues because of coal waste has become a national issue. It has been estimated that power plant development in Indonesia in 2025 will increase the amount of coal ash. However, Indonesian government regulations state that coal ash is classified in B3 (Toxic and Hazardous Materials). In this case, one of the most appropriate solution is to utilize coal ash as geopolymer materials. There are many research indicating that geopolymer concrete is high-quality material, fire-resistant, corrosion resistant and can immobilize toxic waste. Our studies in Indonesia are already leading to an industrial scale, such as manufacture of the pavings and bricks. Pavings obtained compressive strength of 550-600 kg/cm2 at the age of 7 days. These strength are comparable to high quality conventional paving at 28 days. Results of laboratory-scale research also showed that geopolymer concrete beams have better ductility than the conventional ones. In addition, geopolymer concrete has also been proven to have a resistance to chloride penetration and high temperatures up to 800 deg C. This material gas to be proposed as one of the innovative materials which is environmentally friendly solution for construction industries.
