Open remark with online platform

Firstly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all stakeholders for their consistent and strong support to JICA Project Office for AUN/SEED-Net that has been in Phase 4 stage at all times.

Since last year, JICA Project Office for AUN/SEED-Net has been shifting some of the paper-based documents to digital platforms. JICA Project Office for AUN/SEED-Net considers environmental concern as one of our priorities. We think reducing paper waste in the workplace is one tangible and effective way to save our planet. Digital platforms also serve more user-friendly function to applicants and increase information accessibility of audiences within our MIs. You will see more online applications from us such as online application forms, ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ), e-newsletter (like this one!), Annual Report, and meeting minutes. Thanks to new technology that allows us to move towards more digital life to have more eco-friendly and user-friendly systems. It is time to go green!

New Project Phase IV, more exciting future to come!

March 11, 2018 marked the day AUN/SEED-Net phase IV officially began. For the past 15 years, we have put our best efforts to drive the engineering education in ASEAN countries through our scholarships, research and mobility grants, and numerous networking events.

The next 5 years, again, lies ahead as an exciting journey we have taken on to reach our project’s objectives in which we are committed to maintain and flourish even a stronger network between our ASEAN member institution and Japanese supporting universities.

In this new phase, we are excited to introduce our new programs: Collaborative Education Program (CEP) and Alumni Support Program (ASP) which is crafted to sustainably enhance collaborations between our member institutions on academic, research, and mobility purposes. With these new activities, we hope for the most exciting future endeavors of the engineering education within ASEAN countries and Japan ahead.

AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conferences are coming soon!

AUN/SEED-Net’s Regional Conferences are organized annually, bringing together people from academia, industry and government to share knowledge and information. For many years, our regional conferences have contributed to strengthening AUN/SEED-Net’s scholar network and fostering collaboration between ASEAN and Japan.

Served as a platform for knowledge sharing, the conferences provide an opportunity for academic staff and students to present their research findings and to gain insight into current technology trend. All participants can enjoy these interesting presentations as well as lectures by high-profile speakers from leading universities and industries.

In addition, the Field Management Meeting (FMM) is held in parallel with the conference to discuss the future direction of field activities for the purpose of future sustainability. The participants are representatives from Japanese Supporting Universities, ASEAN Host Institutions and AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat.

Let’s be a part of our events and meet with other professionals. Your participation is welcome. The sponsorship is eligible for academic staff and students of AUN/SEED-Net’s network who wish to present their research findings.

The upcoming conferences in 7 engineering fields are shown in the following table.

ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ)

First launched in 2011, ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ) is intended to be an international platform for scholars, researchers, and students from ASEAN countries to publish the new and innovative knowledge from academic research outcomes in the region and to improve research quality through review process as well as to develop strong academic society and network.

From 2017 onwards, AEJ will no longer be divided into Part A, B, and C. It will only publish electronic full papers under the name ‘ASEAN Engineering Journal’ with a new e-ISSN 2586-9159. In addition, AEJ will be introduced an online journal management system that allows the journal to be managed electronically.

AEJ is indexed by Thai-Journal Citation Index Centre (TCI) and ASEAN Citation Index (ACI). The journal is in the final process of being indexed by SCOPUS which is the largest database of peer reviewed literature containing abstracts and citations for academic journal articles.

AEJ is open for online-submission all year round welcoming all researchers, especially from the ASEAN region, including young staff and graduate students. For more information about the journal, please visit

We look forward to your online-submission!

AUN/SEED-Net’s Heroine is here!

We are pleased to introduce you to one of the excellent students, Ms. Zon from The University of Yangon (UY), Myanmar. In 2014, she was awarded for AUN/SEED-Net scholarship studying Integrated Graduate Degree Program (integration of Master’s and Doctoral Degree Program) in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) at Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. Since her academic performance is outstanding, one of the evidences is that she publishes 5 papers in high standard international journal, it is a great opportunity for us to have her sharing the secret behind her success as one of the exceptional AUN/SEED-Net scholarship student.

During the interview, she shared that she learnt and gained many wonderful experiences and faced a lot of difficulties at the same time. She reviewed the secret of her success that makes her stand out from others “…the key to success is attitude, motivation, and English skills. Every times when struggling with her study she has never given up and never been afraid to ask when she doesn’t understand. She motivates herself to be active seeking help from her advisor and people around. She also elaborated that the languages barrier might affect the performance of international students so she emphasized the importance of English skills.

Ms. Zon also mentioned that without the strong support of her advisor (Dr. Somsak Panyakeaw) at CU and Japanese co-advisor (Prof. Yasuhiko Arakawa) at The University of Tokyo, she could not have reached this far. Dr. Somsak always pushes her to every opportunities, allows her to do anything and lets Ms. Zon learnt from the mistakes.

Lastly, Ms. Zon expressed her gratitude to AUN/SEED-Net. Because of the benefits to dispatch to Japan under Short-Term Study in Japan Program (SSJP), she has an advantages to conduct many experiments with the better condition of facilities and equipment compared to other students.

Ms. Zon passed the thesis defence with an excellent result. She will be leaving Thailand and back to Myanmar in this August. She is planning to be a faculty member at her host intuition, The university of Yangon. So we wish her all the best to the bright future ahead and we believe that she will contribute what she gained as AUN/SEED-Net scholarship student to her university and country.

About our activity of the month

We, AUN/SEED-Net staff, had grateful time during the office retreat, held during 8-9 June 2018, at Baan Siriporn Resort, Samut Songkhram Province. The venue was just an hour away from the central Bangkok where we could enjoy fresh air, good vibes and delicious foods. The environment did power up the team as a kickoff event during the beginning period of project Phase IV. There, it was such a great chance to rub the shoulders among colleagues while fruitful and constructive discussion was also conducted smoothly. All in all, nothing would ever beat our ambush trip around firefly community shinning at night!

Spread positive energy and see you again next volume J
